Mexican restaurants seem to be springing up all over London at the moment. Having stumbled across one by a complete fluke a few weeks ago (DF / Mexico, on Tottenham Court Road – read my review here), through another fluke we came across Lupita East, situated on Commercial Street, having left Whitechapel Gallery and been looking for somewhere we could have a relaxed lunch and catch up on all the news. Not having heard of it before, and therefore having no preconceptions, we were very pleasantly surprised. The food is GREAT – tasty, incredibly good value and fresh – so fresh, in fact, that they actually make the guacamole in front of you, at your table (our waiter shared the secret Lupita ingredients with us but swore us to secrecy, so you’ll have to guess by looking at the photo).
Neither of us are meat eaters and it was really nice to be confronted with so many veggie options – my quesadillas with poblanas peppers, corn, cream & cheese were delicious, as were Claire’s quesadillas with refried beans & spicy salsa. There were plenty of options other than quesadillas, too – i.e. plenty more reasons to return.
We rounded off our meal by feasting on churros accompanied by Mexican chocolate and cajeta (dulce di lece) sauces – oh, happy, happy days.
